Pascal's Wager Wiki

Throwables are the single-use weapons you hurl from the quick menu: knives, jars, crystals, smoke and lures. They are not in the normal item table but in a table of their own (WeaponData, item ids 30001-30013). Their damage does not grow with your attributes, which makes them a flat tool for pulling enemies, setting a status on a tough target, or breaking an enemy's guard from range. For potions and elixirs see Consumables; for the general item rules see Items.

All of them have a carry limit of 10. "Poise damage" is the table's ToughnessSub, "Weakness damage" is WeaknessSub / BossWeaknessSub (see Poise and stagger and Weakness and execution), and each hit also does 40 durability damage to destructible scenery (DurabilitySub). "Straight" throwables fly in a flat line for up to 30 units at speed 30; "lobbed" ones travel in an arc (start angle 45 degrees, gravity -20) towards a point normally 10 units ahead of you, kept between 4 and 20 units (inferred from the constants), and they aim at the target's feet, where the straight ones aim at the chest.

What each one does#

  • Throwing Knife. The basic 180-power knife. Several merchants sell it without a stock limit for 3 to 8 Bone Fragments in journey 1.
  • Fire Jar. The only throwable with an explosion: its blast radius is 5 units, and it has the strongest guard break (100 against 20), so a jar lands through a raised shield. Fire damage is reduced by the target's fire resistance.
  • Wildfire, Huge Fang, Poison Awl. Each is a 250-power knife that also builds a damage-over-time status. Each hit adds 49% to the build-up gauge, so three hits are needed (two leave 98%, just short; gauge rules in Status effects#The build-up gauge). Once active, the status ticks for 40 damage per second for 15 s (600 at most before resistance; the formula 40 x 100 / (100 + R) is in Status effects#Damage over time formula).
  • Stun Crystal. Barely any damage (40) but 50 weakness damage on a normal enemy, five times a normal throw. Against bosses it falls back to 10. It is the quick way to start a Weakness and execution window on a regular enemy.
  • Blinding Smoke. Makes ordinary enemies drop their target for 7 s. Bosses and sanity monsters ignore it; see Blind.
  • Fireworks Barrel. 40 fire damage and a status that drains the target's weakness gauge by 3 per second for 15 s (before resistance, at least 1). Its own build-up gauge fills at once and never drains; details in Burn#Fireworks Barrel.
  • Soul River Water. Where it lands it leaves a lure trap (trap 10007) that pulls ordinary enemies towards it for 4.5 s (status 10105). It shares a family with Blinding Smoke.
  • Ebbinghaus's Essence. Described as a concentrated form of Soul River water. It applies a one-second marker status (10106), the same marker that ends the frenzy of The First Fallen: Handel (see Blind). It is not for sale and there is one fixed pick-up in the DLC area.

How throwing works#

  1. Pressing the throw button on a throwable in the quick menu starts the throw animation. It needs you to stand on the ground and not already be throwing.
  2. One item is taken from the bag at the release frame of the animation, not at the button press (inferred from the animation trigger).
  3. The throw uses the weapon's own table row instead of the move's: damage type (AttackType), defence type (DefenceType), poise damage, guard break and statuses all come from the throwable.

Power#

The attack value is (attack stat x BaseRate / 1000) x (1 + race bonus) + Param1, then the usual defence curve, with a floor of 30% (see Damage formula). Because heroes appear to have no Fire, Pierce, Arcane or Dark attack stat (no source of one was found in the hero data, talents or trophies; inferred), the stat part is zero and every throwable deals exactly its listed power before defence. No attribute increases it. Hero damage bonuses against humans, beasts or Sendril also only multiply the zero stat part, so they do nothing for throwables.

Hidden mechanics#

  • Trophies that change your attack or health do not touch throwables. Conditional attack bonuses (full or half Health), life steal and the self-damage trade-off, and the energy gain on critical hits, all check "no thrown item" in the code. See Trophies.
  • Blocked hits still apply the status. A status is only skipped when the hit was blocked and the status has its guard flag set; Burn, Bleed, Poison, Blind and the weakness drain do not have it, so enemies that block still catch fire.
  • Poison, Burn and Bleed throwables use their own status rows. They do not use the enemy versions of the statuses, so their values (40 per second, 15 s) differ from what enemies use. Bleed from the Huge Fang does not trigger Viola's "Bloody" bonuses (see Bleed).
  • From the second journey, Throwing Knives turn into Huge Fangs. The fixed Throwing Knife pick-ups in the first five regions exist only in journey 1, and the Huge Fang appears in their place from journey 2 on. Enemy drops switch the same way, and most shops sell the knife only in journey 1 (some in journeys 1-2) and the Huge Fang later. See New Game Plus.
  • The Arcade copies (30012, 30013) are identical in power to 30002 and 30004 and are used only in Arcade stages. See Arcade mode.
  • Ten of each is a hard cap. The bag will not take more; the pick-up message says the bag is full.
  • Stun Crystal's big weakness hit is for regular enemies only. Its boss value is 10, the same as most throwables, so against a boss it is only a 40-damage item.

Recipes#

Throwables are made at an altar from recipes of type 205 (full table with formula prices: Alchemy#Recipes: Combat Item). The first ingredient is often another throwable or an elixir, so each is a small upgrade chain.

ThrowableIngredientsFormula item
Wildfire1x Throwing Knife + 1x Elixir of Inertia79002
Poison Awl1x Bony Spur + 1x Antitoxin Potion79016
Stun Crystal1x Eroded Rock + 1x Dimming Elixir79017
Blinding Smoke1x Empty Smoking Pot + 1x Anti-Sendril Elixir79018
Fireworks Barrel1x Anthozoan Bones + 2x Nitrate Powder79020
Soul River Water1x Bygone Shadow + 1x Sea Barnacle79021

Formulas: 79002 Wildfire is sold in Adamina; 79016 Poison Awl in Exilium; 79017 Stun Crystal in Katib; 79018 Blinding Smoke in Edith. Soul River Water (79021) is the reward of quest 95218 in the DLC area. No source exists in the data for the Fireworks Barrel formula (79020) or its Nitrate Powder (Alchemy#Where the formulas really come from).
