Pascal's Wager Wiki

Poison is the most common damaging status effect used against the player. Many common enemies, two bosses' environmental attacks and several DLC enemies inflict it, and the Poison Awl throwable lets the player use it in return. It deals poison damage every second for 12 s in its standard form. That damage is reduced only by your base poison resistance: Antitoxin Potions do not affect it.

Variants#

All variants share family 102 (see Status effects#Families and replacement). A is the attacker's poison damage, R the target's base poison resistance (see Status effects#Damage over time formula).

Trap 10001 (the poison monster's pool) has radius 3.5 and lasts 1.8 s. Edith's ground (trap 10006) never expires. Each trap applies Poison 0.2 s after you step in, then once per second.

How fast it builds#

  • Standard poison (+30%): 4 hits with the first and fourth within about 3.0 s. Slower hits drain away at 7% per second.
  • Standing in a pool or rain (one application per second): 30, 54, 77, then 100.4% on the fourth application, about 3.2 s after stepping in. Leaving after three ticks is safe.
  • DLC poison (+60%): 2 hits within about 3.0 s.
  • Poison Awl (+49%): 3 throws within about 6.9 s. Two throws reach 98%, just short.

(The timings are inferred from the gauge rules in Status effects#The build-up gauge.)

Worked example (illustrative): an enemy with 380 poison damage (a level-30 enemy in the stat tables) poisons a hero with 50 base poison resistance. The tick is (64.6 + 30) × 100/150 = 63.07, rounded up to 64 per second, about 13 ticks, so roughly 830 damage. With 100 resistance it is 48 per second.

Marcion poison mist#

The poison mist on the ground of Marcion areas (ground type PoisonMud) uses a separate status, Piercing damage over time (10029, family 199):

  • It deals 15% of your base max HP per second. It is piercing damage and no resistance reduces it (Param3 = 0).
  • It is re-applied every frame while you stand in the mist and lasts 1 s, so it keeps ticking for about a second after you leave.
  • While in the mist you can only walk, and dodging is restricted (PoisonMudDodge 0.4).
  • The Marcion Puzzle Ball trophy (60028) reduces its ticks to 0 and hides its visual effect. It does not lift the movement limits: standing in the mist still forces walking and restricts dodging, because those come from the ground type, not from the status.
  • Only the player is affected: the mist check runs for the host hero only, so enemies standing in it take no damage.
  • It is not flagged as a debuff: Sour Conifer Leaf and Slightly Sweet Roots do nothing against it.

Cures and counters#

  • All the usual cures work (Status effects#Cures). Slightly Sweet Roots also blocks new poison for 30 s (Slightly Sweet Roots+: 300 s).
  • Poison resistance from levels, trophies and talents lowers the ticks. Antitoxin Potion / Blessed Antitoxin Potion (+55 poison resistance for 30 / 60 s) only lowers the poison damage of hits.
  • Blocking does not prevent build-up (see Guarding).

Hidden mechanics#

  • Antitoxin does not protect against the ticks. The tick formula reads base poison resistance, and potion resistance is a temporary change on top of it (Status effects).
  • The pool's own poison roots you. Status 10076 is the game's StatusIdSlow: once its gauge is full and it becomes active, you are limited to walking and dodging is restricted, just like on slow mud. A partly built gauge does not slow you. It lasts only 1 s after the last refresh.
  • Norwood in the Abnormal state (sanity 70% or lower, Lunatic included) has his poison resistance cut by 50% for the tick formula, or by 30% / 10% with "Adapt to Abnormality: Inertia" (the talent text says 40% / 20%). See Status effects and Norwood.
  • On Casual player poison ticks are × 0.65, and × 0.5 with the Egg of the Bearer (see Status effects#Damage over time formula, Difficulty).
  • The first hit decides the damage. The enemy's poison damage is captured on the first build-up hit; refreshing never recalculates it (Status effects).
  • Where A comes from. Enemy moves and the traps they place use the enemy's poison damage. Tricks and the acid rain (a trap made by trick 10006, with no owner) use a fixed per-journey damage instead: 100/125/150/175 for the rain. Edith's permanent poisoned ground (trap 10006) is placed by her, so it uses her poison damage.
  • Bomb-man poison explodes in New Game Plus. Tricks 10052-10054 jump from 125 to 800 damage after the first journey. Against 50 poison resistance their poison ticks 24 per second in journey 1, then 82, 98 and 115 per second in journeys 2-4 (in the maze the journey follows depth, see Status effects).
  • Different poisons override each other. An instant 10042 hit on someone already poisoned by 10002 ends that poison and starts a new 12 s one. A 10002 hit on someone poisoned by 10042 removes the active poison and leaves only a 30% gauge.
