Pascal's Wager Wiki

Spoiler warning: this page summarizes the whole main story.

Pascal's Wager is set in Solas, a land that the Dark Mist has covered and that is lit only by the failing light of giant beings called Colossi. Terrence, a former Church executor who became a Courier to find his wife, follows the trail of Teresa from one dying Colossus to the next (HeroData 10001; UIQuest 10102). The Church's arrest order is for a red-haired Witch who stole its Halidom (UIQuest 30509), and the quest texts treat Teresa and that Witch as the same person (UIQuest 10508, 10510; inferred). This hub links to the detailed lore pages and summarizes the story in the order you play it.

The world in five lines#

  1. Solas is the continent. A Courier says the Dark Mist covers the whole land (SiteInfo 99). See The Dark Mist and Sendrils.
  2. Colossi give light and a home to nomadic Disciples; when one fades, its people turn into Marred. See Colossi.
  3. The Church of the Blessedland rules, and hires Couriers to find the Colossal Grave. See Church of the Blessedland. All groups at a glance: Factions.
  4. The Demiurges and Marcions are its victims, and the player's trail runs through both. See Demiurges, Marcions.
  5. The Seals of Yekub are the key objects. See Seals of Yekub.

Main story, chapter by chapter#

The table follows the quest journal, which is the order you play: Exilium, then Katib, then Edith, then the Blessedland. The data's story ids for Katib (5) and Edith (4) are swapped relative to that order (Chapters#Order of the chapters). The Carriage (id 99) is the hub and Ichthyosauria (id 9) is the add-on chapter.

#ChapterStory idWhat happens
1Heggem1Terrence arrives with Glenn, meets Viola and finds the village overrun. A mother searches for her son, a trapped follower of the Ascetic Ramones blames a red-haired Witch, and a Witch's note makes Terrence say the name Teresa. He defeats the flagellant on the mountaintop (StoryDialog story 1 rows 5-118; UIQuest 10102-10106).
2Adamina2Terrence saves a girl, meets a masked man named Norwood, and goes after Adamina's Holy Father, who injects Sendril into Disciples and takes brides. Viola is captured. Teresa appears briefly and takes a treasure (StoryDialog story 2; UIQuest 10202-10210).
3Exilium3The fallen Colossus where banished Couriers gather. A Knight cursed on his wedding night, the Scarlet Meteor fragments, and the first reveal that the fragments match the Church's Seal (UIQuest 10302-10305, 10007).
4Katib5A forest where the Marcions lived. The Sacred Tower has fused with a Colossus. Teresa has taken the Seal, planning to destroy the Blessedland (UIQuest 10502-10511).
5Edith4The exiled Demiurges. Elena and Frollo disagree about the bell and the white dust; the Colossus of Edith wakes and is defeated (UIQuest 10402-10415).
6Blessedland6The Church capital. The Pillars are fading, the Divine Sword is useless, Proxy Higgins is a withering shell, and a betrayal leaves Terrence without Teresa (UIQuest 10602-10608).
7Karst Cave7Underground ruins and a prison. Viola is freed, Norwood's secret is revealed, and Teresa is sacrificed to open the gate of the Grave (UIQuest 10702-10709; StoryDialog story 7 rows 1953-1959).
8The Colossal Grave8The final area, entered with the Scarlet Meteor fragment. Voices of ghosts speak of obsession, guilt and a Marcion girl sacrificed long ago (StoryDialog story 8 rows 2382-2426). The final boss is The First Messenger; the endings are in Endings.
DLCIchthyosauria9Jerold's home inside a giant beast; the Soul River is dry; Terrence must break the Wall of Silence (UIQuest 10902-10907; see Chapters#Ichthyosauria (DLC chapter 9)).

Short version in the Church's terms#

The Church found the Colossal Grave once, sealed it, and spent more than a decade hiding what it found. The Demiurge leader Vaillant was condemned after the Katib expedition, the Marcions were destroyed, and the Church's light began to fail. A Witch who claims Marcion blood opens the Seal for the Church, steals it, and sets out to ruin the Blessedland. Terrence follows because the Witch is the person he is looking for (StoryDialog story 99 rows 728-731; UIQuest 10510; story 6 rows 1655-1660).

Hidden mechanics#

  • A Journey is a loop of at most four. The game's loop limit is 4 (logic/battle/battledata.lua:45), which is why the achievement "Legendary Courier" speaks of the fourth Journey (Achievement 20005). What happens after the credits is in Endings#After the credits; the rules of a new Journey are in New Game Plus.
  • Sixty story items vanish. When a new Journey starts, FS_ItemList:Restart deletes every item whose GamePlusRemove is 1: 60 of the 375 item rows, nearly all of them plot objects (Scarlet Meteor Fragments, Sword fragments, Pillar keys, the Seal marker, the rune stones and the Egg of the Bearer). The full rule and the list of kept key items are in New Game Plus#What carries over and what is removed (structdata/fs_itemlist.lua:137-148; ItemData GamePlusRemove).
  • Flags gate the dialog. Every dialog row can carry ShowQuestId, HideQuestId, CompleteQuestId and RevertQuestId; rows such as the Mist Camp menu (StoryDialog 2441-2445) only exist while the lamp flags are set. This is how the same NPC says different things as the story progresses (ES_StoryDialog columns).
  • Few rows carry a DLC flag. DLCShow is set on only 7 of 3,117 rows (5 with value 1, 2 with value 2); the DLC chapter's 412 rows live in their own StoryId 9 instead (ES_StoryDialog).
  • Dialogue lines have almost no speaker. The English text is just sentences; ShowHeroId is set on only 6 of 3,117 rows and MonsterId on 191 (ES_StoryDialog). Speaker attributions on wiki pages are therefore inferred from context unless a hero id is present.
  • Cut and leftover text. Items such as "Seal of Yekub in" (ItemData 90000), Chinese-only labels like the Confessional key (ItemData 72106) and untranslated placeholders (ItemData 21027, 20008) show unfinished entries.
