Pascal's Wager Wiki

The only side quest of the Ichthyosauria add-on chapter is a small mechanism puzzle wrapped in a story about water. The giant creature's Soul River has dried up and the people living in it have forgotten who they are. A boy named Bravo believes that if the Wall of Silence is opened, the Soul River will flow again and the contaminated Ichthyosauria will slowly recover. He has found the mechanism that opens it, but whoever hid it kept the control lever and the gear wheel apart.

Walkthrough#

  1. Talk to Bravo (his first of four spots, see Ichthyosauria NPCs#Bravo). After his warning that monsters are close, and his explanation of the mechanism, choose "I'll do my best". He gives you a Sea Tooth Bone (item 50005, an Immundus stone) with the words that he found it somewhere else and you may "consider it recycling". The log entry River of Memories appears with its one step, Find the control lever and gear (flag 95183).
  2. Find the two parts. The Control Lever (10064) and the Gear Wheel (10063) are separate pickups in the chapter; each is shown once its own crate trigger has fired (flags 92176 and 92189; inferred: the parts come out of specific crates).
  3. With both in the bag, interact with the dam mechanism. A cutscene (timeline 2) plays, both parts are deleted and the Wall of Silence opens (flag 93008). You receive the achievement The River Shall Flow (Normal difficulty or higher: leastUnlockDiff 2, so Casual cannot earn it).

If you refuse Bravo ("I don't have time to do that right now"), he tells you not to wander and to find a safe place. A "Changed your mind?" option appears the next time you talk to him, so the offer stays open.

What changes when the dam opens#

Flag 93008 is the biggest world-state flag of the chapter, shown in the data by the objects it turns on or off:

EffectObject
New spotsStory monster 9024 (the Gold Digger model, an enemy with its own drop table), 9025 (Bravo's last scene, dialog 91236) and 9132 (a Heggie that exists only after the dam, see Heggies)
Water and ship propsWall objects "dam mechanism", "ship floating behind the dam" and "water", plus a dam-open effect
New pickupsAnother Sea Tooth Bone (9118) and Wrinkled Journal: IV (a document, pickup 9087)
DialogThe thirsty NPCs' pre-dam lines (12 dialog entries) are hidden and replaced by lines such as "the river is flowing again"
HiddenThe early Sea Tooth Bone copy (9119) and Bravo's first three spots 9009, 9019 and 9021

The chapter therefore holds three Sea Tooth Bones around this quest: the dying watcher's gift (quest 95219), Bravo's gift (95220) and one pickup that sits at the same spot before the dam (9119) or, if still untaken, after it (9118). The two pickups share completion flag 92218, so only one of them can be taken. See Immundus for the stones.

Other things tied to the same flags#

  • The Gold Digger hoards Soul River Water. After you have seen the source of the Soul River he lets you "take" a Soul River Water (item 30010) three times safely (quests 95115 to 95117), one per conversation. A fourth take (95118) also gives one but removes him. All these offers are hidden by flag 93008, so collect them before you open the dam. Details: Ichthyosauria NPCs#The Gold Digger's portions.
  • The waterside man wants to find Rochette. Rochette hands you the Saint's Broken Spear (item 10065) when you end her talk, and when you give it to the man he points you to a cave below the waterfall. This is a separate errand with no log entry (Ichthyosauria NPCs#Who is who).
  • A sleeper near that cave warns of a "man-eating demon" and says "perhaps only those fellows up above know the real answer" about why the river dried up.

Hidden mechanics#

  • The dam is a timeline, not a quest completion. Flag 93008 has quest type "timeline" (17): the parts are consumed and the flag set only when the cutscene finishes.
  • The log header has sort order 0, so River of Memories is the first entry in the Branch tab even though it is the newest line. It is also the only side quest without a Witness flag.
  • The Wall of Silence choice has no failure. Refusing, accepting or ignoring Bravo does not close any other content.
  • The DLC chapter needs the DLC story flag set; the main log marks it with DLCQuest = 1.
