Chapter 6 takes place in the Blessedland, the walled holy city whose pillars of light are failing. Besides Eleanor it contains four other story NPCs (and Glenn at the exit), one of which marks a point of no return for your party.
The blind old man#
A blind old man (hero 20038, two spots: monsters 6081 and 6082) lingers in the city. He is not a merchant but trades information.
- First meeting (6081). He senses the Courier and says it is odd that the pillars' eternal light cannot keep the Sendrils out. Everyone blames the Marcion curse, but he noticed the pillars fading more than ten years ago. He asks the Courier to investigate the four pillars, offering to trade old stories for what he finds. The quest side (the four sword pieces, the Blessed Basilisk) is The Secret of the Four Holy Pillars. The Courier can accept or refuse. Either way he says he will wait in the Chamber of Trinity Hall.
- Second meeting (6082). He asks if the Courier found the answers. The menu has four topics, three of them gated: show him the sword, ask what he knows, ask what happened fifteen years ago, and ask why Proxy did not appear.
- The sword shows a matching inscription on the hilt, which he takes as proof that Proxy cannot escape blame for the fading pillars. He then reflects that the Colossal Grave's secret is a Divine Sword that absorbs the Sendrils and restrains the light.
- His account: the famous betrayal fifteen years ago was a staged event arranged by Proxy to cover secrets of the Blessedland that could overthrow the Church. Only Vaillant and Proxy came back alive from the Colossal Grave and both stayed silent. Nobody has seen Proxy since Vaillant was sentenced, and a groaning has come from deep in the city for a decade. He believes Proxy is keeping the Seal of Yekub from fulfilling its curse and that the Marcions are tied to the whole affair.
- He ends with the blunt claim that only spotless faith can relight the Blessedland, and that Proxy has lost God's favor.
- Reward. The final line sets the Tale flag 95062 (the Basilisk itself comes from the quest page, not from him). The quest log entries are "Investigate the Four Holy Pillars" and "Find Proxy".
The crossbowman Nya#
The crossbowman (hero 20019, monster 6112) guards Nya's Key, the key to the pillar called Nya, one of the four Holy Pillars.
- If you meet him before the later flags, he says you are lucky not to be contaminated yet. He is badly wounded by a Marred monster and does not expect to last. He gives you the key, tells you to return to Trinity Hall and wait for Proxy.
- After the sequence flag 65044 he is resentful: he accuses the Courier of destroying his efforts to protect the pillar, tosses the key at him and wishes the Sendrils would drag him away.
- Later spots only say "You had your chance."
In both branches the key is given (quest 65062), so the sour version is only a change of tone.
The cultist#
Another NPC reuses the Eleanor model (monster 6106). He smells of something pleasant and asks for "the code" along with your hatred for the Blessedland. The menu has three replies: stay silent, ask "Code?", or say Azath. The last option only appears when a flag (62312) is set. Giving the right code ends the talk and changes his behavior (quest 65063 runs "change monster AI" for monster 6106 with AI 6), after which he tells the Courier to share the joy with them (inferred to be an ambush or a fight; the action itself is just an AI change).
Proxy Higgins's body: the party point of no return#
After the Papal boss falls, an automatic cutscene plays and an NPC appears with the Proxy Higgins model (hero 20040, monster 6090). It has no story to tell. Talking to it brings up a warning that some characters will be unavailable in the next part of the journey, with a Yes or No answer.
- No returns to the map and you can keep exploring the Blessedland.
- Yes (flag 65012) plays movie 1004, then the long conversation with Benita (monster 6091). After that Viola and Norwood leave the party. See Viola and Norwood.
Hidden mechanics#
- The same NPC has a second "continue?" dialog that is shown only when flag 99999 is complete. Nothing in the dialog tables ever sets it, so it appears to be unused (inferred).
- The blind man's topics set the flags 65035-65037 and 65021, which feed the "Find Proxy" quest.
- In Arcade mode the Higgins gate (monster 10060090) and Eleanor (1006077) exist but the blind man and the crossbowman are not copied.
