Pascal's Wager Wiki

The Bone Fragment is contaminated bone from the Marred. It is the one currency every merchant accepts, the smallest of the four experience items, and the only one you can lose by dying. For the larger sizes (Big Bone, Fractured Body, Filthy Core) and the special currencies see Currencies.

Uses#

BlessingBlessing an elixir costs Bone Fragments (15, 25 or 30 per item depending on the elixir, BlessPrice, see Blessing).

Where they come from#

Most enemies carry a drop group that can roll Bone Fragments; the largest single roll is 10 to 38 in Heggem and 50 to 80 in Karst Cave, depending on the journey (details in Currencies). Each chapter from Adamina on also has one fixed pile of 88 to 199 as a pickup, identical in every journey, and the Ichthyosauria DLC chapter has five piles (201 in total). Three Adamina quest rewards (25083, 25084, 29009) pay out 99, 99 or 66 outright, together with a Raw Stone and an Ascetic's Whip.

Dying#

When the whole party falls the game removes a random 25% to 35% of your Bone Fragments (rounded down, then a 30% chance of one extra when a fraction was left). Other currencies are untouched. The rule and a worked table are in Death and respawn#When the whole team falls. The lost fragments come back as a recoverable bundle only if the trophy with effect 131 (World-Devouring Promise) is equipped when you respawn (Trophy effects, Death and respawn#The Heggie stash); without it the loss is permanent. If you die a second time before recovering the bundle, the first bundle is replaced by the new one (RemoveDropItemByReplaceId).

Hidden mechanics#

  • Spend or dedicate before risky fights. Bone Fragments are the only currency at risk, so dedicating them at an Altar or converting them into Immundus stones or materials is the only way to make them safe.
  • Doubling. A Potion of Wealth doubles every dedication item you pick up for 10 minutes, so drink it before a farm run, not after (status and recipe: Currencies#hm-the-potion-of-wealth-doubles-the-four-sizes).
  • No sell-back loop. A Big Bone sells for 7 Bone Fragments but is worth 200 XP when dedicated, which is 8 times a Bone Fragment's 25. Selling it and dedicating the fragments gives 175 XP, about 12% less (all four sizes: Currencies#The currencies).
  • Always auto-collected. Bone Fragments are picked up automatically on contact, no button needed (logic/item/itemscene.lua:115-130: every main type 4 item is auto-get).
  • The Broken Bronze Whistle costs Bone Fragments too. Using the whistle (item 26001) runs the same loss routine as dying, HostPlayerDeadDrop (ControllerStoryMode:Transfer), so you pay 25-35% of your Bone Fragments for the trip, and no recoverable bundle is made. The in-game prompt says only "some Bone Fragments". The Bone Whistle (26002) does not take them. Arcade exception and details: Consumables#hm-the-broken-bronze-whistle-is-not-free-using.
