Pascal's Wager Wiki

Consumables are the potions, elixirs, powders, cleansers, whistles and jars you drink, eat, blow or set down during a run. In the game's item table they are the rows with main type 2. This page lists every one of them with the numbers the game uses, where each can be bought or found, how the blessed versions are made, and the hidden rules around them. For things you throw, see Throwables. For how the buffs themselves behave (stacking, talents, duration), see Buffs.

Every hero carries a quick menu of 7 slots for these (and for throwables). Slot 7 is skipped when the game looks for a free slot to put a new item in. In the normal game you assign slots yourself; only in Arcade mode are picked-up consumables placed into a free slot automatically.

Health Potions#

The Health Potion is not a normal bag item. Each hero has a stock of potions saved on the hero (3 for Terrence, 2 for every other hero; the talent Health Potions: Stock adds 1 / 2 / 3). The game's table gives every hero 4 "second potions" as well (Medium Health Potion), but nothing in the code ever uses them.

  • Heal: Ceil(base max Health x 350 / 1000), so 35% of your base maximum Health, rounded up. A Terrence with 849 Health heals 298. It uses base maximum Health, so Health buffs do not make potions stronger.
  • Talent "Health Potion: Evolved" multiplies the 35% by 1.10 / 1.20 / 1.30 (38.5% / 42% / 45.5%). The result is capped at 100%.
  • Cannot be drunk at full Health. The potion is not used up and nothing happens.
  • Refilled to the maximum every time your hero is reborn (after a death, and when you rest at an altar, which uses the same routine; inferred) and, apart from your first load, when an area is loaded outside the maze (inferred from InitData). Potions are the only consumable that comes back for free.
  • Benita's tolerance. While Benita is in the abnormal sanity state, drinking builds a "drug resistance" gauge (statuses 10044-10046). Once it is active (30 s), her potions heal half as much (SanItemValueSubRate 500). See Benita.
  • Speed Drinking (talent) switches the drinking animation to a faster one. Drinking gives no poise armour unless the hero has Health Potion: Patience (see Poise and stagger).

The Fully Recovery Potion uses the same code with a heal value of 3000 per mille, which is clamped to 100%. It is a normal bag item (stack of 10) and is also refused at full Health.

All consumables#

Durations given as "normal / blessed". Effects in the "Buffs" article are described in full there; the numbers below are taken from the same status rows.

IDItemStackEffect
20001Health Potionhero stockHeals 35% of base max Health.
20002Medium Health Potion99No effect: the game's "mana potion" branch is empty. Not obtainable.
20003Large Health Potion99Regeneration +20 Health per second for 30 s (600 Health in total). Not sold, dropped or placed anywhere in the data.
20013Fully Recovery Potion10Heals 100% of base max Health.
20010 / 21010Elixir of Stamina10Stamina recovery +100% of base for 30 / 60 s.
20012 / 21012Elixir of Health10Regeneration +20 Health per second for 30 / 60 s (600 / 1,200 Health).
20022 / 21022Elixir of Energy10Actions cost no Stamina for 15 / 30 s.
20023 / 21023Elixir of Recovery10Regeneration +35 Health per second for 30 / 60 s (1,050 / 2,100 Health).
20020Elixir of Sanity10+1 Sanity per second for 15 s (15 Sanity). Cannot be used in the maze.
20030Vertebra Nail10+5 Sanity per second for 3 s (15 Sanity). Maze only.
20021Elixir of Hallucination10-5 Sanity per second for 5 s (25 Sanity lost). See Sanity loss (status).
20014 / 21014Brute Force10Physical attack +35 for 30 / 60 s. Side effect: for the same time your physical defence is reduced by an amount equal to its base value (status 10084, a stat-reduction row with a value of 10,000 per mille), so it is effectively 0 unless other bonuses stack on top (inferred).
20024 / 21024Elixir of Epiphany10Physical attack +55 for 30 / 60 s. Side effect: you bleed 1.5% of base max Health per second for the same time.
20015 / 21015Powder of Defence10Physical defence +55 for 30 / 60 s.

20011Potion of Wealth10Experience items (bones) you pick up count double for 600 s. Cannot be blessed.
20028Shriveled Holy Fruit10A 400-point shield for 60 s. See Shields and protection.
20026Sour Conifer Leaf10Removes every debuff (see Status effects).
21026Slightly Sweet Roots10Removes every debuff and makes you immune to new ones for 30 s.
20027Ancient Silver Key10Revives your dead second hero with 25% Health and full Sanity (see below).
21027(unnamed, "Revive+")5Same, with 75% Health. The English name is missing in the data and the item is not obtainable.
20031Hound Amulet10Movement speed +30% for 300 s. Maze only.
20033Glowstone10Pushes the Dark Mist back for 300 s (status 10098, the maze fog-distance effect; the exact distance was not checked, unverified). Maze only.
26001Broken Bronze Whistle1Teleports you back to the carriage; costs Bone Fragments (see below).
26002Bone Whistle10Teleports you back to the carriage and is used up.
26003Immortal Jellyfish Jar1Leaves a marker that restores Sanity within 2 m (status 10083: 0.5% of base Sanity per second, rounded up, so about 1). Up to 10 markers stay, and placing an 11th removes the oldest. Placing it does not use the jar up (inferred from the code: no bag item is spent), and the game puts one back in your bag when an area loads and you have none.
26004Moon Jellyfish Jar10Leaves a marker for 60 s that stops Sanity drain within 2 m (status 10097, maze Sanity fix; effect inferred). Maze only.
20009Ammo99Viola's coloured-bullet ammo. Picked up directly into her ammo, never into the bag.
20008"Frog" item1Internal item with no English name, used by the death-drop and frog code.

Blessed versions have the item id +1000 (for example 20010 becomes 21010). Maze copies with ids 72111-72120 are the maze's own versions of the blessed Inertia, Antitoxin, Energy, Recovery, Epiphany and Petrification (72113, 72114, 72116-72119), plain Elixir of Hallucination (72115), Shriveled Holy Fruit (72120) and Hound Amulet (72111), and Slightly Sweet Roots+ (72112) makes you immune for 300 s instead of 30 s. They are only handed out by the maze.

Blessed versions#

Twelve elixirs and powders can be blessed: Stamina, Health, Brute Force, Powder of Defence, Inertia, Antitoxin, Dimming, Anti-Sendril, Energy, Recovery, Epiphany and Petrification. A blessed version has the same strength and twice the duration (60 s instead of 30 s; Elixir of Energy 30 s instead of 15 s). Its drawbacks last twice as long as well.

Benita does the blessing at the carriage (cost 15 Bone Fragments per potion for Stamina, Health, Brute Force and Powder of Defence; 25 for Inertia, Antitoxin, Dimming and Anti-Sendril; 30 for Energy, Recovery, Epiphany and Petrification). Each potion succeeds with a 40% chance (70% / 100% with her talent Elixir Research), a failed potion comes back unchanged, and 20 successes on one potion teach you its recipe. The full rules, the hidden jackpot roll and the cost to learn a recipe are in Blessing.

Recipes#

Brewing happens at an altar and never fails; the ingredient list, quest condition and formula source of every recipe are in Alchemy#Recipes: Recovery, Alchemy#Recipes: Enhancement and Alchemy#Recipes: Combat Item. Four recipes use other elixirs as ingredients: Energy needs two Elixirs of Stamina, Recovery two Elixirs of Health, Epiphany two Brute Force and Petrification two Powders of Defence. The Elixir of Sanity needs no formula item (6 Bone Fragments, shown by the early Alchemy intro). Ten formulas are sold by chapter merchants, five Formula items come from quest rewards or a pick-up, and the Epiphany and Petrification formulas have no source except the blessing counter (Alchemy#Where the formulas really come from).

Where to get them#

Merchants#

Prices are for journey 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 (journey 4 and beyond use the last column). Merchants are named by their story monster id (merchants 1902-1904 and 99601 are the carriage vendors); see Merchants and Chapter merchants. "Restocks on rest" means the stock is refilled each time your hero is reborn (death or altar rest); other stocks only reset in a new journey.

Fixed pick-ups in the story areas (some are dropped by a particular enemy). Quantities are the totals for journey 1 / 2 / 3 / 4, so the same chest holds more in later journeys. Health Potion refills appear in the world only in Arcade mode stages.

Enemy drops#

Enemy drops use a pool per enemy type: each pool is a list of weights and one entry is chosen. Consumables are rare in these pools.

DropSourceChanceJourneys
Health Potion (refill)Almost every regular enemy placed in an area (pool weight 35 of 100)35% per kill, only while your stock is not fullall
Health Potion (refill)Four enemies in Heggem, on the first kill only100%first kill
Elixir of Epiphany, Petrification PowderTwo-faced enemy (model 20037) in Blessedland and Karst Cave4% eachall

Hidden mechanics#

  • Potions cannot be wasted on drops. When your potion stock is full, the Health Potion entry is removed from every drop pool before the roll (Drops and loot#How a group is rolled), and a Health Potion on the ground cannot be picked up ("bag full").
  • The first kill is a guaranteed refill for four enemies in Heggem; every other regular enemy has the 35% pool.
  • Potion strength is a flat 35% of the base maximum Health, so potions are relatively stronger the lower your maximum Health, and equipment that raises max Health does not raise the heal.
  • Only one buff per family. Drinking a different resistance elixir cancels the previous one, and Elixir of Stamina and Elixir of Energy replace each other. Details in Buffs.
  • Revive key rules. The Ancient Silver Key only works if your second hero is dead; otherwise the game shows an error and keeps the key. It does nothing in dream stories. The revived hero returns with 25% Health (75% for the unobtainable "Revive+") and full Sanity.
  • The Broken Bronze Whistle is not free. Using it runs the same "lost bones" routine as death: you lose a random 25% to 35% of your Bone Fragments (rule and worked table: Death and respawn#When the whole team falls), except in Arcade mode, where the loss is skipped (controllerstorymode.lua:10213-10217). Unlike a death, the lost bones are not left on the ground (inferred: the return value is thrown away). The Bone Whistle is used up instead. It is sold by the carriage merchant 99601 once quest 21006 is done, and also lies around in the world (see the pick-up table above).
  • Maze-only and non-maze items are enforced. The Elixir of Sanity is refused in the maze, and Hound Amulet, Glowstone, Vertebra Nail and the Moon Jellyfish Jar are refused outside the maze and Arcade mode.
  • Consumables cannot be sold. Their price entries are 0 or -1 (the Bone Whistle has 50, but it is a consumable) and the sell screen only lists materials and bone items. See Items.
  • Talents. Prolonged Duration and Improved Effect cover most elixirs, with levels that differ per hero (Prolonged Duration +10/20/30% for Terrence, Viola and Benita, +10/20% for Norwood and Jerold, +15% for Elena; Improved Effect +10/20/30%, Elena +15/30%, see Buffs#hm-the-item-talents-are-bigger-than-they-look); Sanity: Enhanced Elixir restores 10 Sanity per potion according to its text, but the data value is 5 (see the talent trees). Many talents are not applied to the maze copies.
  • Doppelganger. A sanity doppelganger drinks your Health Potions; the Health Potion stock lost this way is dropped again when you kill it (the sanity doppelganger enemy; the drop pool exists, the rest is inferred).
  • Prices rise with every journey. The same shop row has four prices, one per journey (an Elixir of Health costs 10 / 15 / 25 / 35 Bone Fragments), and journeys 4 and above use the last one. Placed pick-ups also grow. See New Game Plus loot and shops.
