Pascal's Wager Wiki

This page is about the second boss fight. For the first duel, see Elena (first duel); for the playable hero, see Elena.

Elena (second duel) is the rematch against the nun-swordswoman in Chapter 6, fought in the second area of the Blessedland arena (Arena10009). Unlike the first duel it is a normal fight that ends with a real defeat, and the AI is allowed to use its full kit, including the swap between one sword and two swords. It is one of the Bosses of the main story.

Phases#

There is no phase 2 (her grade threshold is 0, so the Lunatic promotion cannot happen; see Elena (first duel)#Phases). Instead she changes stance on her own:

  • One sword (moves ending 1). Her opening set: four-hit light and heavy chains, a rush and a six-hit combo. The heavy attack H1 (30% chance when you are within 4.5 m, 16 s cooldown) finishes in the other stance.
  • Two swords (moves ending 2). After H1 lands its second trigger her skill set switches (SetSkillConditionAll(2)). The flat power per hit on the main chains is lower (40 or 30 instead of 90) but the chains are longer and include the 22.9 m hold-heavy flurry HP2. LP2 (30%, 16 s cooldown) returns her to one sword (hero20039.lua:78-88).

Unlike the first duel, this fight has FinalHit = 0, so the AI's stance-switching branches are enabled (IsbossFinal() is true).

Stats#

How the numbers scale#

Stats come from the model's attribute points plus the placement level and the grade rows of ES_StoryMonsterProperty (New Game Plus enemy scaling#What a level does to a stat). Journey 1 is the first playthrough; journeys 2 to 4 are New Game Plus, and later journeys reuse journey 4 (BattleData.GameLoopMax = 4). The values below were calculated with the game's own formula and rounded down.

Health is 5,366 / 11,152 / 14,743 / 17,137 at journeys 1 to 4 (levels 15 / 45 / 65 / 89), and attack and defence are the same as in the first duel. The full table is in Elena (first duel)#Stats.

Moves#

Her moves come in two sets. Moves ending in 1 are the one-sword stance (the first duel uses only these); moves ending in 2 are the two-sword stance. The AI file (attack20039.lua) lists a cooldown for every move, but several share the same 1 s base cooldown and are chosen by range and chance only.

Raw strength of two typical hits#

A move's raw strength is attack stat x the move's attack multiplier + the move's flat power, using the stat that matches its damage type; your defence or resistance then reduces it (see Damage formula and Damage types and resistances). The table shows that raw number before your defence is applied.

Standing attack OP21 (120, physical)54891611171269
Heavy combo HHHHH2 (strongest hit) (40, physical)46883610371189

Drops and rewards#

Killing her fires quest 61004 ("second nun fight, leave boss mode") and 61005 (save position). The first one carries the achievement Demiurge's Destruction (achievement 10012) and the exit from boss mode. Two story items appear, each shown only after quest 61004:

If you are Lunatic when she dies, her sanity-drop list (SanDropId 60021) also rolls: a 40% chance of 2 to 3 Anthozoan Bones, 60% nothing.

Hidden mechanics#

  • Counter in one-sword stance, dodge in two-sword stance. She counters (S1/NS1, SkillCondition 1) when she has been stuck in hit reaction for more than 2 s or while you start an attack close to her. She dodges (skill 102, SkillCondition 2) with a 100% chance when you attack within 5 m (ranged attacks within 10 m). Because H1 sets every skill to condition 2 and LP2 sets them back to 1, the two defences swap with the stance: after H1 she dodges but cannot counter, after LP2 the reverse. The AI details of the counter are in Elena (first duel)#Hidden mechanics.
  • Stance memory. The skill condition is stored on her, not on a timer: she stays in two swords until LP2 completes. Interrupting LP2 or H1 with a stagger before the second trigger point keeps her in the old stance (inferred from OnSkillTrigger, which checks trigger > 1).
  • Sanity cost 55. Removing all her health costs 55 sanity, so a full-sanity hero ends the fight near the Lunatic line but she never changes (see Lunatic state).
  • Loot scaling. The Fractured Body count rises with the New Game Plus journey (3, 6, 9, 13), while the Blackwater Crystal stays at 1.

Strategy#

  • Two-sword combos have a low flat power (30 to 40 per hit), so the dangerous attacks in that stance are OP21 (standing, 120, 10 degree cone: sidestep) and OP22 (running, 120, 6 to 17 m).
  • The flurry HP2 travels 22.9 m: do not try to outrun it, break line of sight or dodge through it.
  • H1 is the cue that she is about to change style. Hit her out of the move before it completes to deny the stance change.
