Pascal's Wager Wiki

Chapter 9 is the DLC set inside the body of the giant Ichthyosauria. Its people are cursed: they cannot keep memories unless they drink Soul River water, and the river has dried up since the Wall of Silence was closed. Almost every NPC here is dying, forgetting or both, and their talk is the main source of the chapter's lore. All of them are driven by quest flags numbered 91xxx and 95xxx.

Who is who#

NPCSpot (monster id)Role
Dying watcher (corpse model, hero 20056)9001He has tried again and again to wake an imprisoned soul but cannot break through its shell. He gives the Courier a Sea Tooth Bone (item 50005, quest 95219), hopes the Courier will fulfil an unfinished wish, and dies.
Waterside man (corpse model, hero 20056)9008Asks whether the Courier saw the "ugly, twisted face" hiding in the water basin and wants to find Rochette. Topics: the loud noise (the wail of Ichthyosauria, enraged by a ship of pirates) and the ship of madmen (pirates once taken in by Lord Ebbinghaus, who stole the creature's wisdom). Give him the Saint's Broken Spear and he recognizes it as Rochette's: she waits in a cave below the waterfall.
Rochette (poison impostor model, hero 20048; see Venomous Impostor)9007Warns visitors not to go deeper because of a man-eating demon. She waits for the water to flow again, afraid to forget everything when she sleeps, and half-remembers a ship in her dreams. When you end the talk she hands over the Saint's Broken Spear (item 10065). That she is the Rochette of the other man's talk is inferred.
The Gold Digger (hero 20049; the enemy Gold Digger uses the same model)9006A greedy hoarder of Soul River Water; see below.
Bravo (hero 20052)9009, 9019, 9021, 9025A boy who is the main guide. See below.
Glenn (hero 90011)9003, 9029See Glenn.

The Gold Digger's portions#

He first says there is nothing left to share and tells the Courier to look at the source of the Soul River. Later he gives out Soul River Water (item 30010, a throwable whose smell drives the Marred mad) one portion at a time: the "Take" option appears four times (quests 95115 to 95118). On the fourth he says he knew the Courier was greedy and the quest action destroys his NPC (quest 95167, action 5). All four offers are hidden once the dam opens (flag 93008), see River of Memories#Other things tied to the same flags. If you stop before the fourth, he later remarks on the heartbeat of Ichthyosauria and gives Ebbinghaus's Essence (item 30011, a very concentrated Soul River Water) once the river flows again (quest 95221).

Bravo#

The boy named Bravo appears four times in the order of the chapter. The quest log calls him the boy who saved the party in a room of stone coffins.

  1. Monster 9009 (coffin room). He saved the party with his last bottle of water. He says no real Soul River water remains down here, that the people of Ichthyosauria forget everything without it, that creatures called Scavengers hunt anyone who tries to climb, that the Wall of Silence was built by "selfish guys up there", and that nobody can beat the final gatekeeper. In this talk Jerold says he has no memory of this place.
  2. Monster 9019 (corpse pile). He is searching a pile of bodies for new Soul River water; he says there was once a revolt and the dead were dumped here before the Wall of Silence closed and the river dried up. His parents did not come back; he thinks the Scavengers took them. When you leave he gives you a Formula: Soul River Water (item 79021), a recipe used in Alchemy. He calls Lord Ebbinghaus the saint who gave his life to protect Ichthyosauria.
  3. Monster 9021 (quest giver). He found the mechanism that opens the Wall of Silence, but its control lever and gear wheel were hidden apart. He asks the Courier to find both (River of Memories). Agreeing gives a Sea Tooth Bone (quest 95220); refusing makes him say he will wait there. The quest log shows "Find the control lever and gear" (message 21202). While you search, he asks whether you have found them.
  4. Monster 9025 (ending). After the river flows again he is dying and asks the Courier what the sky looks like.

Hidden mechanics#

  • The game gives no warning before the Gold Digger's fourth portion, which makes him disappear; taking only three keeps him alive for the Essence at the end.
  • The questions you ask the Waterside man and the Scavenger-warning topics set "read" flags (90072-90080), which only track which topics were seen.
  • Bravo's last scene (91236-91240) appears only when the river flag 93008 is set.
  • The chapter has four Sea Tooth Bone sources: the dying watcher (95219), Bravo (95220) and one pickup that sits at the same spot before the dam (9119) or, if still untaken, after it (9118); the two pickups share completion flag 92218.
