Pascal's Wager Wiki

Burn is a fire status effect that deals damage every second, usually for 8 s. Torch-wielding enemies (Fire-Lighter), bomb throwers (Scissor Crone), the Boar Man and several boss fires inflict it, and the player can use it with the Wildfire throwing knife. Its damage scales with the attacker's fire damage, but because of how the data is set up, every enemy burn is reduced by your physical resistance, not your fire resistance.

Variants#

All variants share family 108 (see Status effects#Families and replacement). A is the attacker's fire damage, R the resistance named in the table (base value only, see Status effects#Damage over time formula).

Who inflicts it#

Holy Father (20014)10008burning ground (trap 10004, radius 3.5, 10 s) created by some of his moves and by his fireball (trick 10001, 400/500/600/700 fire damage by New Game Plus journey). Ground from his moves uses his fire damage; ground from the fireball has no owner and uses the trap's own damage, 100/125/150/175 by journey
Proxy Higgins (20040)10037flames left after he drives his sword into the ground (trick 10032; the burn uses the trick's damage 100/125/150/175 by New Game Plus journey, not his own fire damage)
Fused Sprenger (20034)10078his dark-art circle (trick 10017; the burn uses the trick's damage 120/160/200/240 by New Game Plus journey)

Trap 10003 (another "ignited corrosion" ground) contains Burn but is not used by any move in the tables. See Bosses for the boss fights.

How fast it builds#

  • Standard burn (+30%): 4 hits with the first and fourth within about 3.0 s.
  • Burning ground (one application per second): active on the 4th application, about 3.2 s after stepping in.
  • Strong burns (+40%): 3 hits within about 3.0 s.
  • Wildfire (+49%): 3 knives within about 6.9 s. Two knives reach 98%.

(Inferred from the gauge rules in Status effects#The build-up gauge.)

Worked example (illustrative): an enemy with 380 fire damage burns a hero with 100 base physical resistance: (47.5 + 5) × 100/200 = 26.25, rounded up to 27 per second, about 9 ticks, so roughly 240. Proxy Higgins' strong burn does not use his fire damage: it comes from a trick, so A is the trick's damage. In the first journey that is (30 + 5) × 100/200 = 17.5, rounded up to 18 per second (22 / 25 / 29 in journeys 2-4). Fused Sprenger's circle burn gives 21 / 27 / 33 / 39 per second at 100 physical resistance.

Fireworks Barrel#

The Fireworks Barrel's status 10080 belongs to the burn family but does no HP damage. It drains the target's Weakness (stagger) gauge by 3 per second, reduced by fire resistance and rounded up (so at least 1), for 15 s. The Weakness gauge is the bar that breaks into the Weakened state when it empties, and it regenerates on its own when the enemy is not weakened. The drain therefore pushes the enemy toward a break and works against that regeneration (see Weakness and execution). It does nothing to an enemy flagged as having no Weakness. Its gauge never drains (StackSubPer 0), and it is applied instantly.

Cures and counters#

  • All the usual cures work (Status effects#Cures); the Sour Conifer Leaf text names Burn explicitly.
  • Physical resistance (base) is what lowers enemy burn ticks.
  • Elixir of Inertia (+55 fire resistance) does nothing against burn ticks: wrong resistance, and a temporary buff in any case (why). It still reduces the fire damage of the burning hit.

Hidden mechanics#

  • Fire burns are resisted by physical resistance. Rows 10008, 10037 and 10078 have AttackType 2 (fire) but DefenceType 1 (physical). Only the player-thrown Wildfire burn (10012) and the Fireworks Barrel status (10080) use fire resistance. Heavy armour protects against burning; fire-resistance gear does not. This looks like a data-entry slip, but it is what the game does.
  • Norwood's Abnormal-state resistance penalty does not apply to enemy burns, because it only affects non-physical defence types (Status effects, Norwood).
  • Fireworks cancel burns. The Fireworks Barrel's status is in the same family: throwing one at a burning enemy ends the burn and replaces it with the stagger drain. A burning hit on an enemy under Fireworks ends the stagger drain and leaves only a 30% (or 49%) burn gauge.
  • Boss fire burns scale with the New Game Plus journey, not with the boss. Proxy Higgins' and Fused Sprenger's burns use fixed per-journey trick damage (see above), so their tick depends on the journey, not on the boss's stats.
  • On Casual player burn ticks are × 0.65, and × 0.5 with the Egg of the Bearer (see Status effects#Damage over time formula, Difficulty).
