Pascal's Wager Wiki

A Dream Chest is a gamble: a sealed chest from the royal treasury whose contents, according to its in-game text, nobody (not even the Siflers) knows. Buying one at the Dark Mist safe house instantly pays out a random trophy with random properties. All five tiers cost 250 Spectre Mushrooms; the higher tiers become available as you progress and give better trophy levels.

Unlock order#

Each tier appears in the shop when a quest is complete and disappears when the next one is:

(ShowQuestId and HideQuestId on shop rows 4990009 to 4990013.) Only one tier is on sale at a time, so the shop always offers exactly one chest, the best one your progress allows (Safe house shop#Stock lists the rows).

What is inside#

The chest's Param1 is a drop group in the safe-house tables (4990001 to 4990005). Buying a chest rolls that group using the weights below (ExchangeCtrl.GetRandomTrophyId); all results are random-property trophies. If your trophy bag is full (600 trophies) the purchase is refused.

ChestTrophy levels (share of weight)Number of different trophies
1level 1 (50%), level 2 (40%), level 3 (10%)7
2level 3 (75%), level 4 (25%)11
3level 4 (76%), level 5 (24%)15
4level 5 (94%), level 6 (6%)17
5level 5 (58%), level 6 (42%)17

Chest 1 holds seven common random trophies: Bloodthirsty Eye, Beastheart Stone, Glowing Crystal, Poison Arrowleaf and Pagan Icon (17.6% each) and Hunting Claw and Daemon Mask (5.9% each). Chest 2 adds Flamel's Ring (13%), Skullcutter, Beast Chain and Meteor Bracelet (4.3% each). Chest 3 adds Mist Bracer, Brass Mask, Executioner's Gloves and Stag Rings (3.9% each) and Flamel's Ring is its largest entry (12.9%). Chest 4 adds Zealot's Crest and Raw Gem Amulet at 3.1% each, with Flamel's Ring at 14%. In chest 5 those two rise to 13% each, level with Flamel's Ring, while the common trophies shrink to 3.9% and below. (Shares are summed over the trophy levels of the same name.)

Hidden mechanics#

  • Level 6 is rare except in chest 5. Chest 4 gives a level-6 trophy only 6% of the time, chest 5 gives it 42% of the time. Because each tier replaces the one before it, you cannot keep buying the cheaper-quality chest once the next quest is done.
  • The levels shown are trophy levels, not +N. A "level 6" trophy is the maximum enhancement (+5); see Trophy enhancement.
  • The odds are fixed per chest, not per chapter. Your bonus drop-rate talents do not change them, since the roll is a shop action rather than an enemy drop.
  • The roll is deterministic per save. GetRandomTrophyId seeds the random generator with the save's stored seed plus a counter (FS_SaveStory:GetRandomSeed: a seed between 10000 and 99999 plus a counter that grows by 10 with every seeded draw and wraps after 999,999). The same save state therefore gives the same trophy, but the counter moves on with each purchase (the in-game effect of reloading a save was not tested).
  • No restock limit. The rows have unlimited stock (-1) and never reset, so you can buy as many as you can afford and as many as the 600-trophy cap allows.
