Pascal's Wager Wiki

Corrosion is a debuff status effect that lowers physical defence instead of dealing damage. The enemy version halves the target's physical defence for 15 s and is the signature status of the Holy Father fight. The same family also holds the side effect of the Brute Force elixirs, which drops your physical defence to zero.

Variants#

All variants except the last share family 103 (see Status effects#Families and replacement). The reduction is a share of the target's base physical defence (stat 10, "PhysicResist") and is subtracted from the current value for the duration. Physical defence cannot go below 0.

See Bosses for the fights.

How fast it builds#

  • From hits (+25%): 5 hits with the first and fifth within about 3.8 s. Four hits are exactly 100%, which only works if they land within the 0.2 s before draining starts.
  • On the corrosive ground: 25, 44, 62, 80, 98 (just short), then active on the 6th application, about 5.2 s after stepping in.

(Inferred from the gauge rules in Status effects#The build-up gauge.)

Example: a hero with 120 base physical defence under Corrosion has 120 − 60 = 60 physical defence for 15 s. Every physical hit during that time is calculated against 60 (see Damage formula and Damage types and resistances).

Cures and counters#

  • The usual cures remove Corrosion and the Brute Force side effect alike (Status effects#Cures).
  • Resistance does not reduce Corrosion: the row's Param3 is 0, so the full 50% always applies.
  • Blocking does not stop the build-up (see Guarding).

Hidden mechanics#

  • Corrosion affects hits, not damage over time. Direct hits use your current physical defence, so Corrosion makes them hurt more. Bleed and Burn ticks use base physical defence, so Corrosion does not raise them.
  • Enemy Corrosion replaces Brute Force's penalty. Both are family 103. An enemy Corrosion hit while the Brute Force side effect is active deletes the side effect (defence back up) and starts a 25% Corrosion gauge. Drinking Brute Force while corroded replaces the −50% with the side effect, which sets defence to 0 (inferred from the family rules in AddStatus).
  • Talents make Brute Force's penalty last longer. Brute Force (20014, 21014) is on the item list of "Prolonged Duration" (ItemStatusTimeAdd; the levels per hero are in Buffs). The side effect is lengthened along with the Attack buff: a 30 s penalty becomes up to 39 s (36 s for Norwood and Jerold, 34.5 s for Elena).
  • Dodge the penalty entirely. The defence-down side effects (10084/10085) are blocked by the debuff immunity of Slightly Sweet Roots, but the Brute Force attack buffs (10057/10058) are not: drink the roots first and Brute Force gives the buff without zeroing your defence (recipe and caveat: Status effects). "Improved Effect" also lists Brute Force, but the penalty is already −1000%, so it changes nothing visible.
  • The Treasure Thieves weaken themselves. When the Black Sprite King enters its weak condition it applies −40% physical defence (10110) and a Weakness cut (10111) to itself. Both are removed when it changes condition. 10110 is not a debuff and is in its own family, so it adds to any Corrosion on the boss.
  • The Brute Force penalty is shown with the Corrosion icon (10003) but without the corrosion visual effect.
