Heggies are the small frog-like creatures that sit in odd corners of every chapter. Talking to one opens a panel with three offerings. Each offering costs something (Bone Fragments, Anthozoan Bones, a Health Potion or Sanity) and makes the Heggie happier, unchanged or unhappier. Get the mood to the top and the Heggie is "satisfied": it vanishes, leaves a reward and counts toward an achievement. This page is the NPC view (where they are, what they cost, what they give). The answer key for all 40 and the exact rules are on Heggie offerings.
Overview#
- There are 40 Heggies in the game data (table
StoryFrog): five in each of chapters 1 to 7 and five in the Ichthyosauria DLC (chapter 9). Chapter 8 has none. - The in-game text calls each offering "Dedicate X to please Heggie". The creature is named after the first chapter, Heggem (inferred from the pun; the text only says "Heggie").
- The panel always offers the same three choices for a given Heggie. Each choice changes the hidden mood (1 to 5) by +1, 0 or -1, and each Heggie has exactly one of each. The starting mood is stored per Heggie (
Satisfycolumn): 22 start at 2, 12 at 3 and 6 at 4. Mood 5 satisfies it, mood 1 makes it leave. Rules and the full answer table: Heggie offerings#How the game works, Heggie offerings#All 40 Heggies.
Offering types#
| Offering type | Item or resource | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Health Potion | You pay by using up healing flasks; you need at least the amount asked (1, or 2 from chapter 6) |
| 2 | Bone Fragment (item 40001) | Costs from 5 to 40 |
| 3 | Anthozoan Bones (item 40011) | Costs 1, or 3 in the DLC |
| 4 | Sanity | Costs 15 or 20 (shown value; see below) |
The code calls type 3 "FogCoin" internally and the UI text of type 2 says "Filth Bones" in its description while the title says Bone Fragment. The items consumed are the ones above (the first and fifth entries of the experience-item list in ms_itemdata.lua).
Sanity. The panel shows Sanity as a number that is not your current Sanity: twice the amount your Sanity is above half of its maximum, or 0 at or below half. Paying an offering of value V removes only V/2 Sanity points, and you can pay only if V is strictly less than the number shown.
Costs by chapter#
Within a chapter every Heggie uses the same price for a given offering type (checked against all 40 StoryFrog rows). Which offering is the pleasing one, and how often it must be paid, is listed per Heggie id in Heggie offerings#All 40 Heggies.
| Chapter | Bone Fragments | Health Potions | Anthozoan Bones | Sanity (printed) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 5 | 1 | 1 | 15 |
| 2 | 5 | 1 | 1 | 15 |
| 3 | 10 | 1 | 1 | 15 |
| 4 | 20 | 1 | 1 | 15 |
| 5 | 15 | 1 | 1 | 15 |
| 6 | 30 | 2 | 1 | 15 |
| 7 | 30 | 2 | 1 | 15 |
| 9 (DLC) | 30 or 40 | 2 | 1 or 3 | 20 |
Clearing all 40 with the pleasing offering each time costs 815 Bone Fragments, 405 printed Sanity points (about 203 real Sanity), 28 Health Potions and 16 Anthozoan Bones (summed from Satisfy and the +1 SelectValue of every row).
Rewards#
Finishing a Heggie runs its completion quest (StoryFrog.CompleteQuestId). That quest does two things.
- It records achievement progress (quest action type 30). Base game: Naturalist, "Satisfied all Heggies" (id 12004), needs 35. DLC: "Dominator's Revelry" (id 40010, quests 95196-95200) needs the 5 Heggies of Ichthyosauria.
- It switches on a pickup at a fixed spot (
StoryItemrows whose show flag is that quest). In chapters 1 to 7 the pickup is one Dominator Crystal (item 40021, a currency of type 403 that the Carriage merchant sells goods for, see Currencies); the same item is listed in each of the row's four slots. In the DLC each Heggie leaves one rune stone (key items 10068 to 10072: Colossus Stone, Humanity Stone, Treasury Stone, Sifler Stone and Heggie Stone). The Dominator's Revelry text promises "the key to the doors of the treasury"; the Treasury Stone is the likely key (inferred, the stones' use was not checked).
The world map also shows a counter of satisfied Heggies for the chapter.
Hidden mechanics#
- A failed Heggie comes back. When the mood reaches 1 the code marks the Heggie as dead, not as finished. Dead monsters are cleared when you rest or die and the area is refreshed, and the mood table is reset at the same time. Only a satisfied Heggie is saved as finished and stays gone (the reading that a Heggie that left returns after a rest is inferred from
RefreshMonsterclearing the dead-monster list; it was not tested in the game). - One DLC Heggie waits for the dam. Heggie 9132 (the Sifler Stone one) is shown only after the dam opens (flag 93008, hidden again once satisfied by 95199), so the Ichthyosauria set of five cannot be finished before River of Memories is done.
- The mood resets when you rest or die, so you cannot spread a Heggie over several lives; you start again at its starting mood.
- Costs rise with the chapter, roughly. The largest Bone Fragment price per chapter is 5, 5, 10, 20, 15, 30, 30 and 40 (chapter 9), so chapter 4 is a small bump above chapter 5.
- Sanity costs are half of what is printed, as explained above, and you cannot pay if you are under half Sanity.
- A -1 offering is never worth paying; a 0 offering only costs you resources.
