Pascal's Wager Wiki

A woman wanders the area outside the Heggem mine, muttering her son's name. She stole the glowing treasure that keeps the Sendrils away from the mine, left the other survivors behind, and cannot bring herself to go back without Jerry. It is the first side quest most players see, and it is one of the sadder ones: the only thing you can bring her is the coat. Her talk about the Disciples and the mine is on Old Woman of Heggem.

Walkthrough#

  1. Find Jerry (log id 20102). Talk to the woman and answer the dialog options. The offer is made with two replies: "I'll see what I can do" starts the quest, the other reply ("I don't have the time") refuses. Refusing just makes her repeat her plea, and the list still contains a question that lets you ask for the favour again.
  2. Return the coat (log id 20103). Out at a remote corner beyond the mine you find a child's Gore-stained Coat (key item 10001). Bring it back and choose "Hand over Gore-stained Coat". She recognises it, realises Jerry is dead (the "John brothers" he played with are now Marred) and presses a keepsake on you.

Reward: Crystal Debris (trophy 60026), plus the Witness count. In the data its single property is a +5 value of type 8, which the Chinese label calls sanity (inferred reading; the English text says it clears the mind and keeps the Marred away). See Trophy list.

Hidden mechanics#

  • You can pick up the coat before accepting. Picking it up sets flags 12001 and 12018, but the "Hand over" option needs both 12001 and the acceptance flag 15006, so you cannot turn it in until you have said yes.
  • Declining sets flag 15096. Accepting sets both 15006 (quest started) and 15096, so 15096 effectively means "was asked". It only controls which of her two repeating lines she says; there is no penalty for saying no.
  • The coat is consumed. The completion flag 15007 deletes one copy of item 10001 from the bag.
  • Monologue triggers. Two ambient lines ("Those seem to be the John brothers... they're Marred now") only fire after you have accepted, so they act as a clue for the later reveal.
  • The log text hints at a moral choice ("with every choice, Terrence can only find the answer in his heart"), but the dialog data contains only one way to hand the coat over, so there is no branch that changes the reward.
  • The next altar rest changes the scene. After 15007 (and the main flag 12013) resting at one of Heggem's altars sets flag 14001. The old woman's model (monster 1017) is then hidden and an enemy with the dog model (monster 1003) appears with its own drop list, and a new line about "the treasure of Heggem's Disciples" becomes available. Rule: Side Quests#Hidden mechanics. The data does not say that the dog is the woman (inferred replacement).
  • Quit-safe. Every flag in this line is written on a save-and-quit, so you can stop between steps.
