Materials are the parts you pick up from the Marred and the land, and turn into trophies, elixirs and throwables at an Altar. The game files them under two item classes: Material (main type 7) for monster parts, herbs and relics, and Stone (main type 8) for four kinds of alchemical stone. Everything stacks to 99. The recipes and the Altar screen are described in Alchemy; this page covers the ingredients.
the main part of a trophy recipe: claws, skulls, relics
706
Other material
the second part of a trophy recipe, or a throwable or elixir ingredient
702
Elixir material
herbs, spores, fungi (a few are also used in trophy recipes, for example Distorting Vine in Wither)
The types are menu categories more than rules. Each trophy recipe in FormulaData takes exactly one Raw Stone plus the part slots, for example Sinister Claw = 1 Miner's Claw + 1 Broken Arrow + 1 Raw Stone. Many recipes are gated by a story quest (ShowQuestId), so a formula appears only once you have reached the matching part of the story.

Pickup counts are per New Game Plus journey (journey 1 to journey 4, see New Game Plus). Blackwater stones pay for Trophy enhancement, which lists the exact cost per step. The stone chosen is tied to the trophy's current level L: a stone of level ceil(L/2), one at odd levels and two at even levels (MS_ItemData.GetAlchemyStoneId). That is why Fusion Stones (levels 4 and 5) never appear. Whet Stones were meant for recasting, but the lookup for recast returns no stone at all, so no Whet Stone is ever demanded (see Trophy reforging).

How to read the tables. "Sells for" is the Bone Fragment value when you sell to a merchant ("not sold" means the price is -1). "Best roll" is the largest share that this item has in any single drop table in those chapters, measured from the table weights; it is not your chance per kill (see Hidden mechanics). "Shop: special" is the general shop in the Carriage (merchant 99601, see Carriage supplies), which has unlimited stock of Heggem Mushroom, Mature Spore, Adamina Herbs, Distorting Vine, Trippy Flower, Eroded Rock, Glass Ball, Edith Moss, Twilight Weed, Active Sendril and Active Symbiote, with prices that step up each journey (Heggem Mushroom and Mature Spore 8 / 12 / 18 / 27). Product names are trophies or elixirs; see Trophy list and Consumables.
Hidden Arcade-mode items that cut 30 / 60 / 90 / 120 from your run clock (internal Chinese names). Stones are swapped for them in Arcade mode, see Immundus.
Drops are weighted rolls, and an enemy rolls several times. An enemy's DropId is a list such as "10001;10014;10020"; each id is a separate drop group, rolled independently, and an item's chance is its weight divided by the group's total. The full rule is in Drops and loot#How a group is rolled.
Full healing charges make materials more likely. Entries that give health-potion charges (item type 201) are removed from the roll while your potion stock is full, so each material's share goes up. Spend a charge, then farm. The skip rule, including the type 202 oddity, is in Drops and loot#How a group is rolled.
First kill is special. If an enemy has a first-kill list, it replaces the normal list for the first kill only, so boss and mini-boss parts (Ascetic's Whip, Colossus Core, Sanctus Bell, Eucharist, Cruets and others) show as a 100% roll. See Drops and loot#First-kill drops.
A second set of drops appears when you are unsteady. In a non-normal sanity state (Abnormal or Lunatic), enemies also roll their SanDropId lists (Drops and loot#Sanity drops, Sanity, Lunatic state).
Lucky Madness talent. Talent 405 adds 5 (level 1) or 10 (level 2) to the weight of drop rows of the item types it covers, at any sanity (the text says Abnormal state only; the code doesn't check): Terrence 701 and 706, Viola 801 and 803, Benita 802 and 702, Norwood and Jerold 601 to 603 (the trophy types, although Jerold's own text says "combat items"). In a table where the item's weight is 15 of 100, +5 lifts its share from 15% to about 20%. (ItemProbAdd, Type 43, see Talents.)
New Game Plus shifts the weights. Drop rows have four columns, one for each journey (capped at 4). In the ordinary drop tables Blackwater Debris has a weight of 5 to 10 in journey 1 and up to 34 to 38 in journey 4 (its boss-style groups stay at 5 to 10 or 100). Heggem's Chipped Immundus rises from 20% to 50%. Most trophy and elixir material weights do not change.
Shops mark parts up heavily. The Heggem merchant (Chapter merchants#Stock list 1042) sells Broken Arrow, Broken Rod and Broken Bone Spur (3 of each) at 15 / 25 / 35 / 50 Bone Fragments per journey, but a merchant buys them for 2. Do not sell parts you will need.
Orphan and unobtainable items. Nitrate Powder (70064), needed twice for the Fireworks Barrel, has no drop, pickup, shop or quest source in the data (inferred: obtained another way, or cut). Saint's Broken Spear (70072) has no recipe and duplicates the key item of the same name. Ids 70031, 70045 and 70046 are empty placeholders (named "none" in the data). Fusion Stones and Whet Stones are unused. Bloodstained Tristram and Bloodstained Basilisk come only from quests 65029 and 65030; Sea Monster's Scales from quest 99111; Ascetic's Whip from the Adamina quests 25083, 25084 and 29009.
No dedication value. Only the four bone items turn into experience at an Altar; parts, herbs and stones never do. See Currencies.
ES_StoryItem ItemId_1..4 = 80022: pickup spots 15 / 17 / 24 / 34 and the sum of Num_1..4 = 17 / 20 / 27 / 38 stones for journeys 1 to 4 (recounted in the cross-fix pass).
