The Dark Mist is the black fog that has swallowed the land of Solas, and the Sendrils are the living contamination carried inside it. Nearly every text in the game treats them as one threat seen from two sides: the mist is what you see and breathe, the Sendrils are what get into bodies, stone, plants and animals and turn them into Marred monsters. The first line of the world description, shown for the Carriage, simply says the Dark Mist covers the whole land (SiteInfo 99). This article collects what the game says about them and then lists the places where that lore becomes a rule you can measure.
Overview#
- Scope. Whole regions lie under the mist. The regions with their own entry in the site list (Heggem, Adamina, Exilium, Edith, Katib, Blessedland, Karst Cave, the Colossal Grave and the DLC Ichthyosauria) are the pockets that Colossi light or other protection still keeps readable; the site list also contains 24 nameless "Dark Mist" entries for the stretches between them (SiteInfo 40100-41500, 49900-50700, 59900).
- Why Couriers exist. The Church sends Couriers into the mist to look for the Colossal Grave, the legendary final resting place of the Colossi (UIQuest 10102).
- Light versus mist. Whatever the Colossi radiate pushes the Sendrils back. When a Colossus weakens, the Sendrils flood its Disciples first (StoryDialog story 1, row 56: Heggem's light is too weak and its Disciples "have decayed into monsters").
What the texts say the Sendrils are#
| Aspect | What the game says | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Contamination of people | Contaminated humans become Marred. The Disciples of Heggem decayed into monsters when the Colossus faded; Heggem's miners grew tools into their hands and baskets into their backs. | StoryDialog story 1 rows 28, 56; ItemData 70001, 70002 |
| Contamination of things | Stone is the easiest non-living thing to contaminate; eroded rock is a sign of the mist and is used as an alchemy catalyst. Animals become feral or poisonous (Dryad Lizards, Woodspirits). | ItemData 70047, 70022, 70053 |
| Bones and flesh | Rotting flesh feeds the Sendrils; the bones are left behind. The altar accepts contaminated bones as offerings. | ItemData 70007, 40001-40004 |
| Crystals | Immundus crystals form inside a host after its energy has been consumed by the Sendrils. | ItemData 50001-50004 |
| Minds | Couriers who fight the Marred for long see things that break common sense; Anthozoan Bones, the brain-like remnants of fierce Marred, cause illusions that an Elixir of Sanity ends. | ItemData 20020, 40011 |
| Not always the same mist | In Katib the toxic black mist is described as a Marcion trick, not the Sendrils. The Marcions held that life runs through past, present and future, and the mist tests whoever tries to cross it. | StoryDialog story 5 row 1187; UIQuest 10503; ItemData 10013 |
| Whose side is the mist on? | Some Disciple tribes secretly worship a Pagan Daemon, Logos, said to be Colossus-like but sinister: born of the Dark Mist and also its source. | TrophyData 69509 (Pagan Icon) |
| Used as a tool | The Pagans built rituals to turn Sendrils into combat strength; a Courier elixir is said to whisper that its power can "disperse the Sendril"; Adamina's Holy Father injected small amounts of Sendril into Disciples so they could keep their bloodline alive. | TrophyData 67310; ItemData 20024; StoryDialog story 2 rows 290, 292 |
What pushes the mist back#
| Counter | Notes | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Colossus light | Described as the basic protection; the crystals that store it are covered in Colossi#Overview. | StoryDialog story 1 row 84; TrophyData 69503 |
| Scarlet Meteor fragments | The meteor that fell on Exilium has an effect like a Colossus and can purify Sendrils. | ItemData 10007; StoryDialog story 3 row 626 |
| Divine Sword (Church claim) | The Church holds that its Divine Sword purifies Sendrils, but a drop text says it failed on a woman it pierced (Church of the Blessedland#Overview). | ItemData 10031, 70061 |
| Mist Lamps | Couriers carry lamps burning whale oil; whale oil is said to come from fossil sea life or from decaying Colossus corpses. | ItemData 10055-10061 |
| Luminous Fruit, Glowstone, Dominator Crystal | Small local light sources, each described as dispersing mist or Sendril smell. | ItemData 10043, 20033, 40021 |
| Consumables | Anti-Sendril Elixir raises Shadow resistance; Sour Conifer Leaf and Slightly Sweet Roots clear debuffs. | ItemData 20019, 20026, 21026 |
| Moon Jellyfish | A Sendril-infused jellyfish variant: Sanity does not drop near it, but it only survives inside the Dark Mist. | ItemData 26004 |
From lore to rules#
Sanity#
The in-game tutorial says that defeating Marred monsters continually lowers a character's Sanity, and that after most of it is gone the character becomes Abnormal (StoryTutorial 1005). For boss fights it says that a character who loses all Sanity becomes Lunatic, that the boss then becomes stronger, and that Elixirs of Sanity stop working (StoryTutorial 1033). These texts simplify the code, which uses fixed thresholds: Abnormal at 70% of maximum Sanity, Lunatic at 50% with a lock that caps every refill at 50. The rules are in Sanity, Abnormal state and Lunatic state. Each hero's Abnormal penalty and bonus are in Abnormal state#Effects by hero.
Jerold is the one hero whose kit is built on the Sendrils: his Sendril Ordeal puts Sendril marks on foes so his combat skills deal extra damage, and more stacks mean more damage (StoryTutorial 1081).
Altars and offerings#
Bone remnants are the currency of the Altar: Bone Fragment, Big Bone, Fractured Body and Filthy Core give small, moderate, large and massive "power" when dedicated (ItemData 40001-40004), and the tutorial describes the Altar as the place to dedicate Sendril remains and raise attributes (StoryTutorial 1017; StoryGuide 2001). See Altars and Dedication.
Mist Camp and the four Dark Mist zones#
The Mist Camp (safe room, StoryId 499) lets you pick one of four Dark Mist zones: Border, Interior, Depths and Cave (StoryDialog 2441-2445). Each zone is unlocked by one of the four Mist Lamps (ItemData 10055-10058), and each lamp tier is bought with the previous lamp, a whale oil (ItemData 10059-10061) and Spectre Mushrooms. The lamp tiers, their costs and the zone requirements are in Deep into the Dark Mist#The Mist Camp and the Mist Lamp. Without the first lamp the camp keeper only tells you to find something to light the darkness (rows 2480, 2486).
Hidden mechanics#
- Spectre Mushroom offerings raise the zone's level. Four dialog options offer 25, 50, 75 or 100 Spectre Mushrooms (rows 2449-2452). Each runs dialog action type 6 with value 1, 2, 3 or 4, which the code maps to
MazeLeveland stores aslevelAdd(ui/controller/dialogctrl.lua:15and:1074-1078;structdata/fs_savemaze.lua:111-113). The floor you enter has its table level plus that bonus (fs_savemaze.lua:345-351), which matches the in-game warning that offering mushrooms makes the Marred of the mist stronger (StoryTutorial 1072, 1075). The mushrooms' lore explains why: they attract powerful Marred (ItemData 40031). The offer table is in Deep into the Dark Mist#Raising the danger: the mushroom offering. - Zone level ranges. The four mazes use these table levels: Border 1-4, Interior 5-9, Depths 10-15, Cave 16-23 (StoryMaze, columns
MazeId,Level; floor by floor in Deep into the Dark Mist#Areas, floors and levels). The offerings stack on top of these. - Mist Lamps survive a new Journey. On a new Journey the item list removes every item whose
GamePlusRemoveis 1 (structdata/fs_itemlist.lua:137-148). The four Mist Lamps and the three whale oils are not flagged (ItemData 10055-10061), so they stay while 60 story items are wiped. See New Game Plus#What carries over and what is removed. - Sanity drops from the mist itself, not just combat. The tutorial for the Terror Obsession says your Sanity decays in the Dark Mist and only constant fighting, which builds your Obsession, keeps it up; at the Obsession threshold the Terror Obsession boss challenges you (StoryTutorial 1077). The drain rates are in Sanity in special areas#The maze (Deep into the Dark Mist).
- Leaving early costs you. Returning to the Mist Camp resets your exploration progress in that area, and if you use the bone-fragment teleport you also lose some Bone Fragments (GameText UI_TELEPORT_USE_TELEPORT_ITEM_Maze, UI_TELEPORT_USE_EXP_ITEM_Maze). Clearing all Terror Obsessions of an area lets you return for free (GameText UI_COMMON_ACTION_MAZE_BACK).
- Maze saints are the lore of "mist hygiene". The Purifying Saint statues give timed buffs; the Cleansing Saint statues trade resources, for example 10 Sanity for 70% Health (StoryMazeStatue 32, 42) or 20 Sanity for a one-time survival of a fatal blow that stacks (StoryMazeStatue 36, 46). Those are the printed prices: the game halves them, so you really pay 5 and 10 Sanity (Maze statues#Sanity is halved). See Maze statues.
Trivia#
- The text of the Courier's Diary treats the "Shining Crystals" that scatter the Sendrils as a reason not to worry about the Colossi getting weak, an assumption the story punishes (ItemData 10011).
- Honey that only people who "know the truth of the Sendrils" can eat is described as the end of nightmares and also a sign that the dream is not a dream (ItemData 10048).
- Starry Honey Wine, which resets a hero's attributes, is described as a drink that makes you forget everything (ItemData 20029).
